One editor for text, code and notes.

Byte Editor is a Windows and macOS program for writing and editing text of every kind: notes and Markdown, source code and config files, tables, huge files and raw bytes. It keeps your notes together in journals, boards and linked documents, guards passwords and private files in an encrypted vault, previews almost any file and plays your music while you work. And it is fun to type in, with effects and sounds that stay optional.

What it is

A text editor, a notebook and a toolbox in one.

At its heart Byte Editor is a fast text and code editor: 44 language modes with syntax colors, multi selection, a command palette, search and replace across whole folders, formatters, converters and an offline spell checker. Markdown opens as formatted text with the source one toggle away, and Wiki links plus a 3D graph turn a folder of notes into something you can navigate. Difficult files are its specialty: text and binaries up to two gibibytes, a hex grid with byte interpretations, CSV as an editable table, and previews for images, audio, video, 3D models, fonts and PDFs beside their bytes. Workspaces give your work a place: folders with Git, servers over SFTP, journals for daily writing, Canvas boards that put notes, code, media and live websites on one surface, and an encrypted Vault for passwords, secure notes and private files. A shared Rust core owns every document, so undo, search and saving behave the same everywhere. Byte Editor runs natively on Windows x64 and ARM64 and as a universal build on macOS, speaks ten interface languages and never sends telemetry.

Why Byte Editor

Why it is the better place to write.

The strongest editors each do one thing well. Byte Editor combines a direct editing feel with serious data handling, adds boards and journals for thinking, a vault for passwords and private files, previews for almost any file and a player for your music, and puts a layer on top that none of them has.

01

Markdown that looks like the result

Write formatted, keep plain Markdown on disk, switch to the source when you want. Wiki links with suggestions and a 3D graph across every workspace make a folder of notes navigable.

02

Boards for thinking in space

Canvas workspaces put notes, code cards, images, audio, video, 3D models, PDFs and live websites on one board, connected and grouped, in the open JSON Canvas format in a folder you own.

03

A vault for passwords and private files

A Vault keeps passwords, secure notes and private files in one encrypted file on your own drive, with AES 256, a master password and no cloud. Reveal, copy or generate passwords, restore earlier versions, and let the vault lock itself when you step away.

04

The files that break other editors

Two gibibytes per file, a hex grid with UTF 8, integer and bit columns and CSV as an editable table. Built into a Rust core, not bolted on with extensions.

05

A preview for almost any file

Images including PSD and SVG, audio and video, eight 3D model formats, fonts, PDFs with passwords and heightmaps open in a preview right beside their bytes. Editor, Split or Preview, chosen per file, decides how much of each you see.

06

Folders, Git and servers built in

File Projects with a live tree, Git status, diffs, commits, pull and push, SFTP and FTP workspaces with verified uploads, and reviewed replace across a whole workspace.

07

Your music while you work

Any folder of music becomes a playlist that keeps playing across workspaces, with Shuffle, Repeat, a compact player in the title bar and a ten band equalizer. Synth or Neon Spectrum visualizations fill the window or the whole screen when you want them.

08

A journal and companions

Daily writing with calendar, Chronicle and Memories, and six companions that walk your status bar. Typing effects and key sounds on top, every one of them optional.

09

Yours to keep

A perpetual license with 12 months of updates, profiles that carry your whole setup to another machine, ten interface languages, native builds for Windows and macOS, and no telemetry.

Ownership

Own it forever. Renting is optional.
